Poll results: Samsung says the Galaxy Note 4 is "the best large-screen phone" - do you agree?

Not long ago, Samsung released a video commercial - seen above - which ends with this statement: "the best big-screen phone just got even better." Naturally, the statement’s about the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung’s latest flagship handset, which is available around the world since early October.

After seeing the commercial, we wondered if you, our readers, agreed with Samsung. So we ran a poll asking you: is the Galaxy Note 4 really the best large-screen phone out there?

The poll results are now in, and - perhaps unsurprisingly - most of you believe that the ...

Samsung now says paying Microsoft after Nokia acquisition violates anti-trust laws

Samsung is facing significant legal battles on two fronts, one being the well-known drama that is Apple v. Samsung, and the other is the less expensive, but equally relevant Microsoft v. Samsung.

Microsoft makes a lot of money from license fees for patents it owns and are put to use in the Android operating system. Samsung, being the largest (and most successful) manufacturer of Android powered devices, pays Microsoft a handsome sum of money to that end.

Microsoft contends that Samsung has not been keeping its end of what is certainly a very large and complex patent fee agreement. ...

Designer reimagines iconic Nokia and Ericsson phones, upgrades them with Android and Windows Phone UIs

Nokia’s 3310 and Ericsson’s T28 were among the best phones money could buy about 15 years ago. Today, of course, their small, monochrome displays, their chunky bodies and obsolete features don’t make them too attractive. But what if, in a parallel universe, the Nokia 3310 and Ericsson T28 ran Windows Phone, or Android? Well, designer Martin Hajek teamed up with German website Curved and reimagined both handsets, endowing them with smartphone interfaces: Windows Phone for the Nokia 3310, and Android for the Ericsson T28.

The Nokia 3310 was reimagined in two versions: one with a color display, ...

Gresso Regal R1 is a titanium-made Android smartphone that costs $3,000

Russian-based luxury phone maker Gresso recently introduced a brand new smartphone called Regal R1. Measuring 143.2 x 70.2 x 8.8 mm, the R1 is presented as the thinnest luxury phone available. The handset is manually assembled, being made out of titanium - which offers extra protection against drops and bends.

Specs-wise, the Gresso Regal R1 won’t wow anyone, but still has a lot to offer (for a luxury product). It comes with a 5-inch Full HD (1080 x 1920) Gorilla Glass display, 5 MP front-facing camera, 8 MP rear camera, 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal memory. The handset is powered ...

Sony releases an Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact infographic full of interesting facts

Expected to start shipping in the US in early November (meaning really soon), the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is definitely a device that can turn heads, being the world’s slimmest and lightest 8-inch tablet (213.4 x 123.6 x 6.4 mm, 270 grams). To remind us of the slate’s attributes - including its water-resistant, IP68-certified body - Sony this week posted an Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact infographic.

Did you know that the Z3 Tablet Compact is thinner than a chocolate chip cookie, and weighs less than a hamster? Well, now you do. You’ll find more interesting facts ...

Halloween humor: Is your smartphone haunted?

When you take time to think about it, our devices possess a haunting nature all year long. First, they’re connected to the internet, and we know the internet never throws anything away, ever.

Then there are the other maddening realities, such as sporadic battery performance, a random reboot, or a contact list with a multiple-personality disorder. Social media, with notification minds of its own, could provide enough content to be its own reality special of Ghost Hunter starring Jesse Ventura.

If ever there was a case to be made for our devices being under the spell of some haunting ...

HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 coming soon to charge select smartphones 40% faster

HTC is getting ready to launch a universal USB charger that will allow select handsets to be powered up 40% faster than with regular chargers. Called HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 (and pictured above), the accessory uses Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology - which debuted last year on the Snapdragon 800 SoC, and is obviously included in newer chipsets, too.

While the HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 is compatible with all HTC smartphones, there aren’t that many which can benefit from its faster charging abilities. For now, HTC is listing the following models: HTC One (M8), HTC ...

Android 5.0 Lollipop vs iOS 8.1: the best compared

Among the multitude of things that can get a geek genuinely excited are the major updates for his or her gadgets. First comes the hype surrounding the software's announcement, then there's the excitement of exploring its new features, and after that arrives the enjoyment of actually using the features brought by the update. This is what iOS and Android users have been or are about to go through. Apple launched its iOS 8.1 update last week, and Google is about to release Android 5.0 Lollipop in a matter of days. Both software releases have been enjoying a lot of attention, and ...

Inbox "Highlights" now let senders surface useful information in an email and throughout Google

Inbox by Gmail is one of the coolest new apps right now. It is an evolution of what email can be, making your inbox into a to-do list, and designed to help you take action on each message that requires something to be done. One of the best ways it does this has just been given a name, Highlights, and Google is telling email senders how to surface useful information.

We've talked about the feature before as akin to Google Now functionality, because right now it will surface options for tracking a package, checking in to a flight, or responding to a calendar invite. But, Google ...

This is the new Android 5.0 build for the Samsung Galaxy S5 with more Material design

We've already seen an earlier version of the Android 5.0 update for the Samsung Galaxy S5, and the rumor has it that the Lollipop update from Samsung will be coming as soon as December. Sammy has been working hard on this, and now we're getting to see a newer version of the Android 5.0 update which includes more Material design elements, and UI tweaks.

Some of the updates are more polishing of the UI, like adding text labels to the tabs in the Clock app, removing the grid lines in the Calculator app, or shifting the on/off toggles on settings pages to the top bar. Colors have ...

Grim, eerie, and terrifying titles with a Halloween price slash – 10 discounted iOS and Android games inside

Well, it's almost that time again – All Hallows' Eve – the time of the year when we, for some reason, celebrate the odd and the scary, either by dressing up as a legendary monster, or snuggling up at home, watching the horror movie marathons that channels schedule each year. Of course, these past years, there has been another media that does an even better job, one would argue, at scaring the bejesus out of us – horror games!

Whether you are running from Slenderman or trying to survive the zombie apocalypse in The Walking Dead, there's just something about being part of the action, the scarrier ...

Of course, there are many other incredible images left to be seen. Let's continue with another set of 10 pics, each of which can easily convince even the most professionally-inclined photographer that cell phones are more than ...

Google on the Nexus 6 pricing: people want $199 flagships, this will sell

Google raised a lot of eyebrows when Motorola announced the Nexus 6 partnership handset, as it strays away from the typical Nexus tradition not only by being a no-compromise giant phablet, but also with the decision to out it at full price, like each and every other flagship out there, instead of subsidizing it to an extent.

This is a veritable U-turn in Google's strategy - the Nexus 6, as all other flagship phones, is selling for $649 unlocked, and the usual subsidized price with a two-year contract, but this time on all five major carriers in the US. "We are selling ...

New NoteThis app comes with a simple way to voice-tag locations, perfect for Android Wear

Say what you will about the usefulness of Android Wear gear, like the Moto 360, or LG's G Watch R, but they are pretty good at one thing - doing very simple tasks very quickly, and certainly quicker than with your smartphone. That's the added value of those companion devices, especially given the ever-growing screen diagonals and overall dimensions of Android handsets.

Granted, there are numerous issues still, especially with battery life of said smartwatches, yet once you carry one, you'd quickly notice how convenient it is for quickly previewing messages and notifications, ...

Motorola DROID Turbo Review

Introduction

Oh Motorola, you’ve been making some serious waves of late. First of all, the Moto 360 received much acclaim from critics and consumers alike when it launched not too long ago – rising straight to the top of the charts when it comes to Android Wear watches. Commendable to say the least, the Moto 360 proved that the company still has some quality aces up its sleeve. On the flip side, though, we were hopeful about the refreshed version of the Moto X, but despite the incremental upgrades and its unique personalized design process, the handset just couldn’t ...

HTC's Q3 reports favorable - slight profit, but looks good after a series of losses

HTC has released its business report for Q3 2014 and it seems rather favorable, considering the series of losses the company endured last year. The report says that the One (M8)'s momentrum continued over from Q2, still selling well despite the cut-throuat competition, while the mid-range Desire 816 and Desire 820 "solid sales" in Asia as well.

HTC's revenue for the quarter is close to $1.4 billion, with a net profit of $19.7 million. Sure, that's not an extreme income, but at least it's not on the negative side. The company also predicts that its revenue will be slightly bigger next quarter ...

Trick or treat! Here are HTC, Samsung, Sony, Huawei, Nokia, ASUS, and ZTE's Halloween shenanigans

The 31st of October has come for many of you around the globe, which means the Halloween craze is going through its motions. Unfortunately, there are no zombies or haz-mat suit wearers to be found in our office (it's kind of hard to accurately assess a smartphone display through a steamy visor!), but our beloved mobile manufacturers are already throwing their Halloween parties in their social network accounts and other means. Let's see who's the scariest!

HTC

HTC set up an awesome Halloween gag for its fans. At 00:00 on the 31st, the glowing ...

Samsung Galaxy Alpha vs A5 vs A3: specs comparison

Last year, Samsung execs gathered together, and concluded that the single biggest obstacle against their Galaxy line of phones' world domination was design. Specs they had mastered, but users were constantly clamoring for a little something something in the premium chassis department.

Well, that little something materialized in the form of the ultrathin, metal-sided Galaxy Alpha, that is undoubtedly a piece that looks and feels very premium, yet still keeps the signature removable plastic back cover. After reviewing the Alpha, we think that Samsung is on to something here, but now it went ...

Ok, Google can now initiate a search within apps

For a while now, Android's voice-activated assistant was able to launch apps when asked to. Google has taken things a bit further and has given Google Now the capability to start a search within any app in the phone.

This means that you will now be able to say "OK, Google, search for hotels in Trip Advisor", or "OK, Google, search for pizza on Eat24" and the voice assistant will launch said app and automatically activate its search with the given parameters.

The connection must be allowed by the target app, so developers need to update their work with just a couple of ...

LG G Watch R Review

Introduction

Wearables have now moved past their first-generation, and with a little help from Google and its new Android Wear platform, we're now looking at offerings that are feeling a tad more solid and robust.

The new LG G Watch R is such a product. Unlike most other smartwatches, the Watch R has a circular display, making it more alike to a conventional timepiece. It's also quite obvious that LG has looked at traditional watches for design inspiration, likely in hopes that this will lure in those of us whose inner geek is not quite as pronounced. Is that enough, however? Let's find ...

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 can be operated with a knife (Fruit Ninja is also a go)

Earlier this month, we showed you that you could easily play Fruit Ninja using a knife on the Sony Xperia Z3. Now, there’s a new video on YouTube which confirms - in case you were wondering - that you can do the same thing on another new and high-end Android smartphone: the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. What’s more, the video showcases the high sensitivity of the Note 4’s display: basically, you can fully operate the handset with a knife, and even the capacitive buttons work when the blade touches them.

Needless to say, the screen of the new Note isn’t damaged in any way after encountering the ...

Amazon blames Fire Phone failure on its price

It probably shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone, but the Amazon Fire Phone turned out to be quite a bust. The device garnered middling review scores all around, and terrible customer review scores; and, Amazon ultimately took a big hit on unsold stock in its quarterly report. Now, Amazon is commenting on the trouble, and is surprisingly blaming the problems on the price of the Fire Phone.

In speaking with Fortune, Amazon's senior vice president of devices, David Limp, said:

We didn't get the price right. I think people come to expect a great value, and ...

Samsung announces ultra-slim, metallic Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3

Samsung today officially announced the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A3, putting an end to all the rumors that have been surrounding the two devices in the past months.

The new handsets are part of Samsung’s Galaxy A series - which is tailored for “young consumers seeking practicality and functionality” - and are presented as the company’s slimmest smartphones to date: 6.7mm (Galaxy A5) and 6.9mm (Galaxy A3). For some weird reason, Samsung seems to be forgetting that it has already released a 6.7mm-thin smartphone: the Galaxy Alpha.

Anyway, both the A5 and A3 come ...

MPAA officially bans Google Glass and Galaxy Gear from theaters

The MPAA absolutely hates piracy, and as far as the MPAA is concerned, piracy starts with someone illegally recording a movie in a theater. So, the logical conclusion is to ban any and all recording devices from movie theaters. Yesterday, the MPAA updated those regulations to specifically target Google Glass and other wearables.

The problem with the updated rules is that the language is relatively vague. The updated language has been expanded to say that "recording devices, including wearable devices, must be turned off and put away at show time". Obviously, this is meant to ...

Sony outs Halloween video to remind us when select Xperia Z phones will be updated to Android 5.0 Lollipop

With Halloween upon us, Sony decided to release a very short Halloween-themed video, this way reminding us that - as previously announced - its Xperia Z series of smartphones and tablets will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop updates starting the beginning of 2015.

The video was posted on Facebook and can’t be embedded here, but you can watch it at the source link below (even if you don’t have a Facebook account).

The first Sony devices to get Android Lollipop (early next year) will be the Z3 and Z2 series. After that, the new version of Android will be rolled out to the following models: ...

Andy Rubin is leaving Google, 19 months after he left the Android team

Andy Rubin - the man who created Android about a decade ago, ultimately allowing Google to own the fastest growing tech product in history - is now leaving the Mountain View company.

According to The Wall Street Journal, both Andy Rubin and Google have confirmed the departure. Reportedly, Rubin’s next project involves “starting an incubator for startups interested in building technology-hardware products.” Other details haven't been revealed.

The news comes less than two years after Andy Rubin stepped down from leading the Android team in order to take care of other projects ...

Google Wallet gets Material design update and automatic money transfers

If you were to just look at the version number of Google Wallet, yesterday saw the biggest update to the app that we've ever seen. Unfortunately, the app itself might not feel as though it received such a big update. Google Wallet made a big leap, going directly from version 2, all the way to version 7, but there were only a couple features added beyond the new Material design makeover.

The big change here is obviously the Material design UI. Google Wallet doesn't have too many layers involved, so you don't quite get the sense of depth; but, you will get the slide out navigation ...

Can Lenovo and Motorola really challenge Apple and Samsung?

Earlier today, Lenovo completed the acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google, as all customary closing conditions and regulatory requirements have been finally met. The price of the acquisition is of about $2.91 billion (including a 4.7% share in Lenovo that now belongs to Google). As previously stated, the purchase does not include the majority of Motorola’s patents, which are (and will be) still owned by Google.

The acquisition enables Lenovo to become the world’s third largest smartphone vendor. Motorola will be run as a wholly owned subsidiary based in Chicago, with offices around ...

Samsung's Wi-Fi/3G-enabled Gear S smartwatch coming to all major US carriers on Nov. 7

If you are itching to try out a smartwatch, but weren't convinced it'll be of any use chained to your smartphone, then you just might find what you're looking for with the Samsung Gear S. This is the first Wi-Fi/3G-enabled smartwatch from a major brand, and it's coming to AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint in the beginning of November.

The Gear S has a pretty large (for a smartwatch), 2-inch curved Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 360x480 (exactly 300 pixels per inch) and is powered by an unnamed dual-core processor, clocked at 1GHz, along with 512MB of RAM (which ...

Angry Birds: Transformers now out for Android

Rovio's latest Angry Birds game – Transformers – has made the leap to Android and can now be downloaded from the Play Store for free.

Transformers is a slightly different game, than the slingshot-based puzzles that we've come to expect from the franchise. It's a side-scrolling auto-runner that sees your hero in a constant dash towards the end of the level, while shooting at various objects and strangely unsafe structures in the background. On top of these structures, one can usually find the Angry Birds' mortal enemies – the green pigs (or in this case – Deceptihogs). The player's mission ...

Poll results: Can the smartwatch be a success by just being an extension of your smartphone or does it need to be a stand-alone device?

At the beginning of the week we asked you whether you feel like the smartawtch needs to be more like what Samsung is doing with the Wi-Fi/3G-enabled Gear S, or a tethered, companion device (like pretty much every other smartwatch on the market) in order to be a success.

First off, our impression that wearables are not that hot of a topic proved to be right on the money -- just under 1,100 of you cared enough about them to cast a vote. Of those ~1,100, 45.68% feel that smartwatches can be a success in their current incarnation -- as slave devices to your smartphones -- while 41.28% ...

Do you think that the double-tap-to-wake gesture should be standard on all phones?

There are plenty of innovative ways to operate our ever-bigger phones with one hand, and Samsung, LG, Sony, Apple and others have come up with their own takes on one-handed modes. These range from more complex features like shrinking the whole interface, to simpler ones, like a swipe from the left edge of the screen being used as a back key.

One option we find particularly useful on a day-to-day basis, though, and it is double-tapping the screen to wake the phone, or put it back to sleep. Once you try it, fumbling with the power/lock key on the sides or the back already seems ...

The CAT S50 and B15Q reach the USA - tough smartphones finally get decent

The CAT S50 was the toughest smartphone to be found at this year's IFA expo. Now, it's also one of the EU-only phones that managed to cross the pond and step on American shores. The smaller CAT B15Q accompanied it on the trip, which means a new duo of extra-buff smartphones is ready to make our weak, skinny handsets shut up and eat their protein.

The CAT S50 is a 4.7-inch 720x1280 screen, Android 4.4-running, LTE smartphone that boasts IP67-certified waterproofing, wet-finger tracking, scratch resistance, and covers the Mil Spec 810G military rating for operating in harsh environments. It's ...

10 best features of manufacturers' custom Android UIs that should be on more phones

In order to differentiate their products from the ones offered by their rivals, pretty much every manufacturer on the planet adds his own touch on top of the existing Android base. That's right, even though your Samsung device looks markedly different from a Nexus one on the outside, they share the same core that is Google's mobile operating system. But it's not just about the skin (the overlay) -- the available feature set across Sony, HTC, Samsung, Motorola, and LG devices differs. Sometimes significantly.

Samsung and LG handsets, for example, are well known for their massive ...

It's official: Motorola and Lenovo finally tie the knot, the $2.9 billion deal with Google is complete at long last

Almost ten months after it was announced that Google has decided to part with Motorola Mobility and sell it to Lenovo for $2.91 billion ($660 million in cash, $750 million of ordinary Lenovo shares, and a three-year promissory note worth $1.5 billion), the acquisition deal between the smartphone makers has been finally completed. Motorola and all of its 3,500 employees around the world are now part of Lenovo.

This was announced by Lenovo in a press release, which details the main strengths of Motorola and its not-so-large, yet more than adequate portfolio that comprises noteworthy device ...

How to prevent Facebook from opening external links with its built-in browser (Android tutorial)

By now, most of Facebook's mobile-only devotees that sail under Android's flags should have been enabled to make use of its built-in browser, which allows them to open external links inside the app itself. As a whole, the idea is not necessarily a bad one, but its realization is not something extraordinary. Just the opposite, in fact - the on-board solution can't stand up to your regular browser of choice performance- or feature-wise, as it lacks a whole array of essential and fundamental browser functionalities. All in all, it's useful as a preview tool, but can't be regarded as a substitute to ...

Samsung re-thinking its smartphone strategy, may shrink the Galaxy portfolio a bit

Samsung has had a tough year in the mobile business, no doubt. The company's Q2 and Q3 financial reports show revenue going down as its facing serious competition from companies like Xiaomi in China, and now Apple, in Sammy's home – South Korea. The handset market has become a highly competitive place, where most of the big players have started to bleed money, and Samsung has inevitably joined the wounded.

A couple of months ago, we heard about Sammy planning to cut expenses and tighten its belt a little. Now, after the Q3 report shows only a slight rise in handset sales, and a significant ...

Huawei USA announces there will be no KitKat update for the Ascend Mate 2

A blog post at gethuawei.com, the webshop that was set up specifically for US customers, has announced that the Jelly Bean-loaded Ascend Mate 2 will not be getting an update to Android 4.4.4 KitKat. This has made quite a few customers unhappy, to say the least, as the mid-ranger is less than 6 months old, and anyone who bought the device was expecting that it'll be getting updates for at least a year.

To make matters worse, there is absolutely no reason given on why the company decided to not update the phone. This has led to a lot of angry customers, which is not something you want when ...

LG outs a durable 5.3" display with the world's narrowest bezel

LG Display is no stranger to record holding - after all, it announced a 5.5" Quad HD panel way back in 2013, which we then thought might be just a proof of concept, but here we are, a year or so later, when QHD has become a household word, with the G3 is racking up the sales numbers. This time the record is not connected with mouthwatering resolutions and pixel densities, but rather something much more useful.

The mobile display section of LG just bragged that it has created the panel with the world's thinnest side bezel, at just 0.7mm, paving the way ...

BlackBerry Passport goes through extreme drop testing, endures it like a champ

Did you get a kick out of that video of the BlackBerry Passport getting torn down with screwdrivers and tweezers? Taking apart the productive handset in a controlled setting is one thing, but getting some extreme drop testing going one is a whole different destructive play. Sherif and Anas from Axiom Saudi Arabia got their hands on a Passport and went to town with it.

The two dropped the rectangular, keyboard-icular oddity of a business phone from chin-height, smacking its face, sides, and back on the asphalt. With no screen protector or case of any kind, it survived with its display intact ...

Samsung releases its Q3 2014 financial report - sells slightly more phones, but revenue is way down

When it rains, it pours. This old saying perfectly suits Samsung's current state of financial affairs. The largest and still not dethroned smartphone maker in the world has been having a lot of troubles over the past few quarters, experiencing both diminishing sales and tumbling earnings. In the beginning of October, for example, it was predicted that the giant from South Korea will once again disappoint and will report unsatisfactory financial results for Q3 2014. The financial report for the quarter is already out, and just as it was expected, Samsung once again proclaims a lot of trouble in ...

The hunt for "viral" is over – Verizon launches official James Franco DROID Turbo ad

In the past couple of days, we've seen two videos that were supposed to look like simple fan footage of random encounters with actor James Franco, where he is accomplishing simple tasks with inhuman speeds. The videos were quickly uncovered to be part of a Motorola DROID Turbo viral campaign – one that would get people talking on whether or not the videos are real, and what the whole thing is about.

Seems the campaign wasn't planned to run for an annoyingly long period of time, though, as today, Verizon has launched an official ad, starring the famous actor, and again – showing him accomplish ...

Microsoft suggests the Lumia 635 may be a better deal than a new iPhone

Far from being a high-end offering, the Nokia Lumia 635 is one of the cheapest 4.5-inch smartphones that you can currently buy in the US. This, however, doesn’t stop Microsoft from pitting it against Apple’s iPhone, suggesting that the Lumia 635 represents a better deal.

Nokia USA’ Twitter account (which is now managed by Microsoft, and should be rebranded soon) recently posted an image showing the Lumia 635 next to a “competitor mobile phone” that costs $700 - it’s easy to guess (by looking at it) that this is an iPhone. Besides the Lumia 635 itself, which can be bought for as low as $100, ...
