There are a lot of quite awesome and intriguing icon packs for Android - normally, a handful of noteworthy ones appear on Google Play each and every day. However, keeping tabs on all of these is quite a cumbersome task, even for those who are into such things. This is why we regularly show you the icon packs that have recently made their way to the Play Store ...

Court approves a deal that gives Sprint one-third of the retail space inside 1740 Radio Shack Stores

In February, Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy. On Tuesday, the bankruptcy court approved a plan that will turn 1740 Radio Shack locations into Radio Shack/Sprint co-branded stores. Sprint's operation will occupy one-third of each store. Delaware bankruptcy court Judge Brendan Shannon approved the sale of the stores to a hedge fund named Standard General.

Adding 1740 new locations could help Sprint since customers have been known to wait for as long as two hours to buy and activate a new phone. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure has praised Radio Shack's locations, calling them "incredible." Back ...

Motorola intros the Moto Selfie Stick: wood, leather, and a touch of class

An old legend has it that for every smartphone owner who hates selfie sticks, there are 100 others who constantly use them. Motorola seems to be well aware of this legend, as it just unveiled its first selfie stick, naturally called Moto Selfie Stick.

Now, the Moto Selfie Stick isn't like the other sticks out there. It's assembled by hand, and comes in several variants, including one that's made out of real wood and is dressed in hand-stitched leather (this would make a great pair with that red leather Moto X, wouldn't it?). As Motorola puts it, "a selfie stick is not just an accessory, ...

Carphone Warehouse and Best Buy shut out of Apple Watch launch?

In the U.K., Carphone Warehouse CEO Graham Stapleton revealed on Tuesday that his 800 store chain will not be getting the Apple Watch, at least not during the launch of the device. Stapleton says that he would love to have the timepiece available in his stores, but says that Apple is "going another way with it." Based on Stapleton's comments, rumors that Best Buy will be shut out of the Apple Watch launch on April 24th would also appear to be true.

So what is the way that Apple is going, as alluded to by Stapleton? Last month we told you that one of Japan's trendiest department stores, Isetan, ...

The kings of storage space: smartphones with 128 GB of internal memory

In case you haven't noticed, we've reached the point where a smartphone can offer the same amount of storage space as a decent laptop. In the near future, we'll even see mid-range smartphones with 128 GB of built-in memory, as Samsung recently developed a new NAND flash chip with that in mind. Of course, all this was inevitable, as high-end handsets with 32 GB of internal memory have been around for quite a while.

Right now, though, there aren't too many smartphones that provide 128 GB of storage space. But we've searched for the ones that do, and we're presenting them below, in chronological ...

T-Mobile's LG G3 users can manually update their phone to Android 5.0.1 right now

But using LG's mobile support tool, you might be able to have the update downloaded and installed on your phone in a matter of minutes. This process allows you to get the update directly from LG instead of T-Mobile.

HTC to pull the plug on the Sense TV app at the end of April

HTC has started informing its customers that the Sense TV app will be shuttered starting on April 30th. This feature allows an HTC One (M7) and an HTC One (M8) handset to be used as a smart TV remote using the IR blaster on the top of the device. On April 30th, the app will be be shut down and both One (M7) and One (M8) users (Android and Windows Phone) will be affected.

Once the Windows Phone and Android Sense TV apps close the doors for good at the end of April, those who have been using the apps will be pointed in the direction of Peel TV. This actually is not much of a surprise considering ...

Want a free VR headset? Buy an LG G3 (US only)

LG now has a gift for customers who are buying its G3 smartphone in the US: a free VR headset (while supplies last). Initially, this offer was supposed to be available starting last month, but it's better late than never, right?

The LG G3 with free VR headset is available only at "participant stores" across the US. Unfortunately, there's no mention on exactly which stores are included. Moreover, the VR headset that LG is giving away is nothing more than a G3-taylored plastic variant of the Google Cardboard (which can be purchased for $20), so it's definitely not as expensive as Samsung's ...

Samsung Galaxy Alpha update to Android 5.0.1 to take place next month

Back in December, we passed along the word from a reliable source that the Samsung Galaxy Alpha would be updated to Android 5.0 by the end of the first quarter. That forecast might end up being a tad too optimistic. A tweet sent out earlier today by Samsung France revealed that the metal framed handset could receive the Android 5.0.1 update at any second. But with the first quarter ending at midnight tonight, an April rollout seems most likely.

The update to Android 5.0.1 will include Material Design, the 64-bit ART compiler for faster opening of apps, Project Volta for longer battery life, ...

Qualcomm says there's no Snapdragon 815 processor in the works

Remember the Snapdragon 815 chipset that we told you about not long ago? According to rumors, this is supposed to be one of Qualcomm's future octa-core processors, allegedly running cooler than both the Snapdragon 810 and Snapdragon 801. But when will it be released? Well, it looks like "never" is the only viable answer to this question.

According to Fudzilla, Qualcomm Senior Director of Public Relations Jon Carvill recently said that "there are no plans for a Snapdragon 815 processor."

OK, so the Snapdragon 815 doesn't exist, but this doesn't mean the current SD 810 - used by ...

Alcatel ONETOUCH Watch now available for pre-order, iOS and Android connectivity, $149

Alcatel made a lot of announcements this past January at CES in Las Vegas. It has significantly increased its marketing to bring more exposure to the brand across the United States.

It has also started selling unlocked devices directly to consumers, capable smartphones like the ONETOUCH Idol X+ and the ONETOUCH Idol 2S, each well under $300 free-and-clear. More than a dozen unlocked and carrier branded devices are available now through Alcatel's direct sales site.

Another big push Alcatel is making involves wearables too. The company announced the ONETOUCH Watch at CES. This nifty ...

In 2015, there's no meaningful difference between a $100 phone and a six times pricier iPhone or Galaxy

It's now been some 8 years since Apple launched the original iPhone at a memorable event hosted by Steve Jobs. The iPhone is now widely accepted to have given birth to the modern smartphone in a form that will get larger (much larger!), but remain the same at its core until this day.

Nonetheless, one thing that smartphones were not when the iPhone and Android phones started selling is affordable. The $200 on-contract price hiding a full price of the hefty $650 paid in monthly installments hidden in your two-year plan, has remained largely intact for high end devices.

Change ...

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Introduction

Trying to predict the future is one of the many things people aren't very good at. Several decades ago, bright minds envisioned a 21st century dominated by glass dome cities, flying cars, jet packs, and, of course, self-lacing sneakers. What they probably didn't imagine us having are cell phones with curved screens (that weren't tiny CRT monitors). Yet here we are, holding one of the coolest smartphones ever made, and it is flaunting curves on both sides of its gorgeous display. The smartphone in question is the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge.

Now, we can't deny the fact that the ...

How to transfer photos and videos from an Android phone to an iPhone

The process of switching one's phone used to be a tedious task back in the day. In more recent years, manufacturers have been kind enough to develop special apps and streamline the process of transferring the data from your old handset to your new one with the least amount of headache induced (check out our articles on the HTC Transfer, Samsung Smart Switch, and Sony Transfer). However, the one switch that still keeps a persistent bad rep is the jump from Android to iOS – due to the latter's closed-off environment, it is often believed that switching to an iPhone involves ...

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Introduction

What better way to determine how drastically Samsung's flagship phone line changed this year, than to lock horns between the Galaxy S6, and the 2014 darling Galaxy S5. Not only do we have a premium chassis (blasphemy!) on the S6, but this time Samsung also pulled out all stops in the specs department.

While last year the Galaxy S5 shipped with a 1080p display “only”, this year the new S6 highlander comes equipped with a Quad HD panel, 3 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB, optical image stabilization for the camera, and a scorching fast chipset. Will these be enough to soothe the pain ...

Xiaomi announces the ultra-affordable Redmi 2A: a $96 dual-SIM LTE-enabled trooper

Earlier this month, we heard that China-based Xiaomi is about to commemorate its 5th birthday (which happens to be today, by the way) with a new device announcement, and it turns out that this is indeed the case. The so-called "Apple of China" just lifted the veil off of its newest device, the Redmi 2A, which proudly joins the ranks of the affordable members of Xiaomi's entry-level range with its ultra-low starting price of 599 yuan (which is roughly $96).

Well, we shouldn't expect stellar hardware or any unique features for this price. Honestly, the price tag itself is a pretty ...

Sony reveals that Lollipop for the Xperia Z is also on the way

Sony may be the major manufacturer that came late to the Android 5.0 Lollipop party, but it seems that it will try to make up for the slowdown by updating quite a few of its handset models. A couple of weeks ago, the company started pushing the update to its most recent tops-shelf smartphones – the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact. Just a day after that started, the update also began rolling out to the Z2 Tablet, Z3 Tablet Compact, and the Xperia Z2 handset. Now, after a two-week silence, it seems that the next wave of devices are slowly going to become known.

Yesterday, Sony confirmed that ...

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge U.S. pre-orders double the amount tallied last year

According to a new rumor, the number of pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 edge in the U.S. are more than double the number of phones reserved in the states last year for the Samsung Galaxy S5. After the Samsung Galaxy S5 was met with a lukewarm response in 2014, Samsung reportedly started Project Zero to rebuild the flagship model from scratch.

Replacing the plastic build with a metal frame sandwiched by two pieces of Gorilla Glass, Samsung went for form over function. The removable battery cover is gone as is the microSD slot. But there are solutions to both. Samsung ...

Carrier coverage claims: What does covering “X-percentage” of Americans really mean?

When it comes to wireless service, there is a difference between coverage, and well, coverage. If there is any perceived weak point in the US wireless infrastructure, it could be argued that it is actual physical coverage, the ability to pick-up a carrier signal anywhere, anytime.

The United States is a large country, and believe it or not, the vast majority of the land mass is not developed. That makes providing any type of service that requires some type of infrastructure, wired or wireless, is a daunting task. That is why providers use carefully parsed marketing language like “service ...

These images reportedly show the new metal build of the unannounced Xiaomi MiPad 2

In India the other day, Xiaomi sold out two weeks worth of inventory for its Xiaomi MiPad tablet in just one hour. The tablet went back on sale yesterday in the country as inventories were re-stocked. Even though the tablet continues to sell well, there is speculation that the company is working on a sequel to the MiPad. A pair of pictures allegedly showing the second-gen Xiaomi tablet have leaked.

Looks wise, the MiPad 2 has a resemblance to the Xiaomi Note. Both share curved glass and a common placement of the front-facing camera and other sensors. The new iteration of Xiaomi's slab will ...

Your photos in Google+ will now show up in Google Drive

Google has some big plans for Photos, of that we have no doubt. What those plans are however are up for discussion. Long tied to Google+, Photos is expanding its horizons.

Recently, Google acquired a photo back-up and sharing platform called Odysee. Mountain View also shuffled some leadership with Google+ while separating Photos from the social medium in the process.

The first indicators of what some of the future looks like for Photos will be noticeable in Google Drive. Given all the pictures we take and share, Google is expanding where Photos can be accessed and shared. It is also ...

One month until Microsoft Build 2015: What to expect

So, it is quite possible you did not know this, but Microsoft’s Build 2015 developer conference is just a month away. Registration quietly opened up (and sold out) in January, and the news out of Redmond has been rather controlled.

Granted, the belle of the ball will be Windows 10, and the converged nature of how developers can build once, and see their creations work across the form factors, desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

Details beyond that however are still largely up to the imagination. That does not mean we cannot discuss some practical realities the Windows platform is ...

WhatsApp update for Android enables Voice Calls

Up until today, if you wanted to use the voice call feature on the Android version of messaging app WhatsApp, you had to receive a call from someone who already had the feature. But we received a screenshot from one of our loyal readers today that revealed the result of an update to the Android version of the app.

As you can see, some changes have been made. Instead of the Chats and Contacts tabs, a third new option has been added. Titled "Calls," when that tab is opened, users tap on the new call icon at the top of the screen. That begins the process of making a call to a person on the ...

Here's how Samsung is shipping its Galaxy S6 smartphones to the US (giant Boeing 747s are involved)

While you can already pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in the US, the two smartphones won't be properly released before April 10. To prepare itself (and carriers and retailers) for the big launch, Samsung is currently loading "several" Boeing 747s with Galaxy S6 boxes. The Boeing 747 is one of the world's largest cargo aircrafts, so it can literally transport tons of Galaxy S6 units (though there's no word on exactly how many of them Samsung is loading onto the planes).

According to previous reports, Samsung expects to sell over 50 million Galaxy S6 and S6 edge units by ...

Second-generation Motorola Moto X available in red leather

Into leather? If you like the feel of the stuff, you might want to consider the new red leather second-generation Motorola Moto X now available from the Moto Maker store. The price of the leather back is the same $25 that Motorola charges for other leather and wood options on the site. Motorola is partnering with Horween for the material.

Let's go over those specs for the second-gen Moto X. The phone carries a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with resolution of 1080 x 1920. That works out to a pixel density of 423ppi. A quad-core 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU is under the hood with the Adreno 330 ...

LG to unveil the LG G4 on April 28th

LG's next flagship device, the LG G4, will be unveiled at a media event on April 28th. The manufacturer has started sending out invitations for the event telling recipients to "Save the Date". On the front of the invites, LG says to See The Great, Feel The Great. The event will be held in New York, London, Paris, Seoul, Singapore and Instanbul. Because of the time difference, it will actually be April 29th in the latter three countries when the event starts.

Rumored specs for the LG G4 have been all over the map this year. Part of that is due to the premium phablet that LG is rumored to ...

Gmail for Android updated, conversation view, unified inbox, and more

Google has been doling out the updates across its most highly visible apps for Android, and the Gmail app is the latest to see some broad enhancements.

Central to the latest update is the ability to unify emails from multiple accounts into one view. The “All Inboxes” view will integrate accounts from any and all different services into a single page, making it much easier to read and respond to messages without having to switch between accounts.

Since the Gmail app is also the email client for other email services, Google has enabled some other Gmail-style features, like Conservation ...

T-Mobile's new coverage map is based on customers' real life experiences

T-Mobile introduced a new coverage map today that is based on "real-time customer experience." The carrier says that the map is comprised of more than 200 million data points reported by T-Mobile customers. This data replaces the previous estimates that the mobile operator employed in producing its coverage map.

The map reveals exactly where T-Mobile customers will find 4G LTE, 4G and 3G coverage. Certain parts of the map show a "Verified Coverage" icon that points out areas of the U.S. where the majority of the data provided comes from T-Mobile subscribers. These customers are relaying ...

Microsoft taking aim at Google’s Chromebook with a Windows 10-based laptop that will cost just $149

Chromebooks have been a selective hit, mostly due to their very low price points (Chromebook Pixel notwithstanding).

Of course, given that these are ostensibly low-cost laptop designs armed with a light OS interface where all the “apps” operate via a browser, there is not much there to inflate the cost very much. The trade-off is that to get the most out of a Chromebook, a user needs to be connected to the internet much of the time.

Coupled with some of the features that Google’s free services lack when compared to what would be a Microsoft Office counterpart, it is understandable ...

Picture allegedly showing off the casing of the Apple iPad Pro shows off second connector port

Apple is allegedly hard at work building a 12.9-inch tablet that could be named the Apple iPad Pro or the Apple iPad Plus. We have seen a number of leaked images showing third party cases for the tablet, and other photos that showed the alleged casing for the slate. Today, some new pictures were discovered on Chinese social media site Weibo, showing off a number of items including one of four speaker grills expected on the tablet.

The picture also reveals what appears to be a second connector on the left side of the tablet. This would allow the iPad Pro to be plugged in even if standing ...

Fun dates to look forward to: April 1st and May 4th

Reading and reporting about the mobile technology industry is fun. The whole industry is fiercely competitive, but because it is also such a creative sector, a lot of folks know when to not take themselves too seriously and have some fun.

April Fool’s Day is just such an occasion to drive the media mad, and entertain the fans. In fact, you can count a lot of the news that day to be dominated by jokesters to one degree.

We do not know what, or if, the tech wizards at Google, Sony, or any one of dozens of other companies are planning to put forth in the name of a good laugh. Motorola ...

Asus ZenFone 2 (including the 4 GB RAM model) officially launches tomorrow in Europe

For Verizon customers sporting the LG G2, today is a day that they have been dreaming about for some time. Android 5.0 is now on the way to the handset via an OTA update and changes the GUI so that it follows the LG G3 and the Material Design look of Android 5.0. The Notification panel will require a single swipe up to display Notifications and Quick Settings at a single time. Swiping up again will dismiss Quick Settings, leaving the Notifications on the screen.

Other changes include Lock Screen notifications, and the new "Recent Apps" menu which includes Screen Pinning. The latter prevents ...

New Samsung infographic shows the differences between the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S5

Samsung wants to make sure that you know the differences between its former flagship smartphone - the Galaxy S5 - and the brand new Galaxy S6, which will be launched around the world starting the first half of April. Thus, the company today posted a Galaxy S6 vs. Galaxy S5 infographic on its official blog.

Obviously, the Galaxy S6 bests the S5 in all departments presented in the infographic. However, what Samsung doesn't show is that, unlike the Galaxy S6, the S5 is water-resistant, and has a microSD card slot (these being two features that would have arguably made the S6 even better). ...

Customize your HTC One M9 with the new HTC THEMES website

One of the new features available on the HTC One M9 allows you to customize the handset using themes that you create yourself. To make it easier to create different themes, HTC is offering a website aptly named HTC THEMES. The site allows you to choose different wallpaper for the lock screen, home screen, messaging app, the app drawer and DotView. Once that is done, you can select from various colors, icons and fonts. You can even use the website to select your ringtones and notification sounds.

You can also select from themes created by other people. Some of these will require a purchase, ...

Apple Stores now accept non-iPhone handsets as a trade toward the purchase of certain iPhone models

Earlier this month, we told you that Apple was working on a way to allow consumers to trade in phones made by rival manufacturers, and use the proceeds of such a trade toward the purchase of a new iPhone. This morning, we can tell you that Apple has completed the training of its personnel, and is launching the program today.

Certain Android, Windows Phone or BlackBerry handsets can be used as a trade-in toward the purchase of an Apple iPhone 5c, Apple iPhone 6 or Apple iPhone 6 Plus. The Apple Watch cannot be purchased with this plan. The devices being accepted by Apple include models like ...

Sony will update the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra to Android 5.0 Lollipop

Earlier this month, Sony suggested that only its Xperia Z devices would be updated to Android Lollipop, without saying anything about handsets like the Xperia E3, Xperia C3, Xperia M2, Xperia T3, Xperia T2 Ultra, and so on. Fortunately, some of these smartphones will get Lollipop after all.

Sony today confirmed that the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra would be updated to Android 5.0, though for now it can't give us exact release dates. Available since last year, both the Xperia C3 and Xperia T2 Ultra are mid-range devices that feature Snapdragon 400 processors and 1 GB of RAM, so we are hoping ...

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Introduction

Samsung simultaneously outed two flagships this year – the regular Galaxy S6, and a uniquely designed handset that has its screen sloping on both sides – the Galaxy S6 edge. As customers will be mostly divided between the regular S6 and the S6 edge this year, we find another important decision some consumers will likely face: the Galaxy S6 edge or last year's Galaxy S5, which is still a superb phone, now at a more alluring price point.

There are many things that make the new Galaxy S6 edge highly desirable by tech heads, such as its impressive Quad HD display, or the new, ...
