Oppo is worried about the rise of fake Find 7 and N3 smartphones

Usually, fake smartphones imitate handsets originally made by big companies like Apple or Samsung, but sometimes smaller vendors are also having troubles in this regard. China's Oppo, known for striving to make unique devices, is one of these smaller vendors.

Recently, Oppo's been discovering a rising number of fake Find 7 and N3 smartphones. According to SoyaCincau, 644 cases of counterfeit Oppo handsets have been reported in Malaysia alone, and the problem is likely widespread in other Asian markets (including, of course, China).

Obviously, Oppo is looking into this, and hopes ...

How to manage your personal dictionary (add and remove words) on Android

Please note: this is a tutorial for inexperienced users (beginners).

Android's built-in dictionary (you know, the one that helps you spell right and powers auto correct) is really comprehensive, but it's obviously not tailored to each and everyone's needs. That's why Google allows us to use personal dictionaries on our Android smartphones and tablets - so we can add new words, or names that we don't want to be flagged as misspelled.

Adding a word to your personal dictionary is easy as pie. Whenever you're typing a message - via whatever messaging app you may be using - if a word ...

Watch Mophie's first Super Bowl ad, it's a hoot!

Business must be great at Mophie. The company is apparently selling a ton of its smartphone cases that feature an embedded battery because after all, a Super Bowl ad ain't cheap. And Mophie is running a spot during Super Bowl 49 as well as offering as much as $1 million in prizes for a contest related to the big game.

First things first. Mophie's ad is tremendous fun as it depicts the end of the world. Dogs are walking their master, it is raining fish, a hurricane invades Nebraska, and there is general chaos through the world. The idea is to show how smartphone users feel when their batteries ...

This is Xiaomi's impressive army of smartphones

Currently one of the world's top five smartphone makers, Xiaomi didn't start by manufacturing mobile phones. Instead, its first product was MIUI, the custom Android ROM that some of you are already familiar with. For those who may not know, Xiaomi is a really young company. It will celebrate its fifth year of existence (and the fourth of selling smartphones) this summer.

How did a company founded in 2010 manage to disrupt the industry and sell more smartphones (61 million in 2014) than well-known manufacturers like LG, Sony, Motorola, and others? Well, it seems to have made it thanks to ...

HTC's Jeff Gordon: the iPhone is "terribly boring"

Earlier this week, Apple reported record-breaking revenues, thanks to the fact that it sold an astonishing 74.5 million iPhones between October and December 2014 (with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus obviously being the stars here). Jeff Gordon, HTC's Senior Global Online Communications Manager, used this occasion to congratulate Apple via Twitter, while at the same time mentioning that he finds the iPhone "terribly boring."

According to Gordon, Apple's handset is "a boring, easy choice." He continued by saying he wants "a phone that's more unique, more personal, more stunning when I take ...

Another Apple Store is about to open in China (Video)

About a week ago, we showed you a video about a new Apple Store opening in China. Apple plans on launching five stores in the country before the start of the Chinese New Year on February 19th, and the Apple Store West Lake location has just been opened. The video we showed you focused on Wang Dongling, an artist who specializes in calligraphy. Wang was using his special talents to decorate the store just before a huge throng appeared to witness the grand opening.

The next Apple Store that will open in China is the Apple Store, Jiefangbei. Apple got two artists to work together, helping it ...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is now live... in Russia

Just a couple of days after the Galaxy Note 3 got its Android 5.0 Lollipop update in Russia, now Russian owners of the Galaxy S4 (model number GT-I9500) can also get rid of KitKat and install the new OS instead - thanks to an official update provided by Samsung.

The Android Lollipop (5.0.1) update weighs in at a hefty 1049 MB, and will bring a lot of novelties to Samsung's flagship from 2013 - which, by the way, ran Android 4.2 Jelly Bean at launch. A Material Design makeover is one of the first new things that users will notice. The update is being sent over the air, and, for now, it doesn't ...

OnePlus One now shipping without Cyanogen branding

As reported earlier today, OnePlus is almost ready to unveil its own Android-based ROM, which owners of the OnePlus One smartphone will have the option to install instead of Cyanogen OS (or stock Lollipop - for those living in India, who can't get the Cyanogen version of the handset). The new ROM is called Oxygen OS, and will be officially showcased on February 12. Besides that, OnePlus seems to have taken another step towards consolidating its own brand, rather than Cyanogen's: as you can see on the left, OnePlus One units that have been ordered recently no longer have the Cyanogen logo on the ...

Apple, Google and Amazon settle issue with Italy and the EU over freemium apps

Apple, Google and Amazon have come to an agreement with Italy’s Antitrust and Competition Authority. The latter agency conducted an investigation in coordination with the EU over the marketing of freemium apps. These are apps that are free for users to download, but offer in-app purchases for things like extra powers or extra lives for a video game, that can be charged to a credit card.

All three companies have agreed to stop using the word free to describe freemium apps in the EU. They also agreed to give users a warning inside the app when an in-app purchase is being made. More than half ...

HTC will miss its 90-day Android Lollipop update goal for some One (M8) and (M7) variants

HTC today revealed that "some carrier versions" of its One (M8) and One (M7) smartphones won't meet the 90-day goal that the company had previously set for the roll-out of Android 5.0 Lollipop updates. The reason for this is that, as you may know, Lollipop included (and still includes) some bugs, which Google's been trying to fix with smaller updates. HTC doesn't want to compromise usability for the sake of perfect timing, that's why it decided to delay the update.

HTC reassures users that it's working hard with carriers and Google to deliver the update to all One (M8) and One (M7) devices ...

LG G Pro 2 gets its Android 5.0 Lollipop update (starting in Korea)

The G3 flagship was LG's first smartphone to get a taste of Android 5.0 Lollipop (though the update is yet to be released in the US), and now we can identify the second one: the G Pro 2.

LG today started rolling out an official Lollipop update to the G Pro 2 in South Korea, with all three Korean variants of the handset taking part in the feast: LG-F350S, LG-F350K, and LG-F350L. Obviously, we are expecting the new versions of the OS to be available soon to G Pro 2 owners in other parts of the world.

Launched in March 2014, the LG G Pro 2 is a fairly large smartphone, as it sports a ...

Rap video stars dancing HTC One (M8)

HTC, which in the past has been criticized for blowing big bucks on pointless promotion, has come up with a cool way to promote the brand. A rapper named Doc G has written a song called "Hold The Crown" and if you haven't figured it out, those initials are HTC. As you can imagine, the rap is all about HTC and the HTC One (M8) flagship model.

Besides a dancing HTC One (M8), other highlights include a rhyme to go along with (HTC CEO) Peter Chou. Some of the flagship model's specs are even included in the rap. Surely this beats Gary Oldman telling everyone to ask the internet about the One ...

Apple shares hit all-time high at $120 before dropping back

Apple's shares, still enjoying the momentum achieved from an amazing fiscal first quarter earnings report, scored a new all-time high today, peaking at $120. Taking into account a 7 for 1 stock split that took place last summer, the shares hit the equivalent of a $840 pre-split stock price. To put the $120 price in perspective, on June 29th 2007, the day the Apple iPhone launched, the stock was trading at a post split price of $16.66. The shares closed at a post-split price of $32.22 the day before the Apple iPad was launched. Since the death of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on October 5, 2011, Apple ...

Verizon sends $42,000 bill to Connecticut woman

Usually when we tell you a story about a $42,000 cellphone bill, it turns out to be an error on the part of the carrier. But not in this case. A Connecticut woman who we will call "Dora" (not her real name, obviously) made a deal with a friend. As long as this friend paid the phone bill each month, Dora allowed him to use the phone number.

The problem is that the friend skipped town, leaving the woman with a big fat Verizon bill of $42,427.21. A collection agency also sent out correspondence. The bill was high because of a large volume of calls to and from the U.K., France, Italy, and Africa. ...

Huawei P8 to be unveiled April 15th in London; no Windows Phone model coming this year

A few days ago, a prototype chassis of the Huawei P8 leaked out. The phone is expected to carry a 5.2-inch screen with a 1080 x 1920 resolution and should be powered by a home grown octa-core Kirin 930 CPU. Completing the picture is 3GB of RAM and a 13MP rear camera with OIS. A 2600Ah battery will power up the whole shebang.

You might expect Huawei to unveil this in March at MWC, but that is not the case. Instead, the company will hold a media event in London on April 15th to take the wraps off of the device. According to Jie Jinjin, Huawei's vice president of handsets, Europe was chosen ...

Outlook tops Gmail in the Apple App Store

If we were the type to write puns and jokes, we suppose this would be a good time to say that the outlook for Microsoft's new iOS app is looking up. Luckily, we're not that type (right). Yesterday, Microsoft Outlook was launched in the App Store and quickly has become a rousing success. The app will handle your emails, contacts list, calendar needs and your files.

Outlook is off to such a great start, that it has even overtaken Gmail in the latest App Store charts. It is the 15th top free app in the U.S., and Apple included it in its list of Best New Apps. The company also sent out ...

Samsung refreshes its Galaxy Tab 4 tablet line with 64-bit chips

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 both recently showed up on the GFXBench site revealing something new. Both slates were powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 chipset. And to complete the hat trick, Sammy is apparently stuffing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 with a 64-bit chip as well.

Instead of using the Snapdragon 410 employed in the other two slabs, Samsung plans on putting the Marvell Armada Mobile PXA1908 inside the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0. The quad-core Cortex A-53 chip will also be found inside the Samsung Xcover3. With the change in silicon, the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 ...

Living with the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge: a long-term review

Introduction

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is a unique and extraordinary phone, there's no denying that. But does its curved display offer any usable function, rather just a fancy look? And does the latest generation of Samsung's Note interface empower users, or impede them? I spent the last month with the Note Edge in hand as my daily driver, nitpicking and looking for benefits, drawbacks, features, and bugs, posting weekly updates, which you can check out below:

How to delete browser history on Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 (TouchWiz browser tutorial)

Every once in a while we tend to use our smartphones for all the wrong reasons. We visit certain cat websites, or other popular hubs, and we want this to stay a secret. However, if you've got that brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 that so many people are talking about, you're bound to get your friends and acquaintances to ask you to look around it and they inevitably start to poke around in that most secretive of places that is your browser.

There is just one step from embarrassment there, and as you are quickly thinking of a reason to get back your precious device, you realize ...

2015 is off to a busy start as we have seen CES bring us a lot of new devices in the beginning of the month, and leaks around the most exciting flagship Android phones intensifying, but it was also a good month for Android, iPhone, and Windows Phone apps.

We also have the usual infusion of great single-purpose apps with ...

HTC One M9 might bring more pizzazz to the Dot View case with yellow and turquoise models

Rumors about the HTC One M9 "Hima" are reaching crescendo mode, with the handset rumored to sport a Quad HD display panel, Snapdragon 810 chipset, and an improved camera on the back. The BoomSound stereo speakers have eventually been slimmed and pushed to the edges for an overall more stylish and compact look. Style is not the name for the two new colors that the inventive HTC Dot View case line will receive with the launch of the HTC One M9, though, as these are said to be yellow and turquoise, as you can see in the mock renders above.

More Samsung Galaxy S6 design details leak - taller, slimmer, with a new set of ports

French website NoWhereElse published a set of elaborate Galaxy S6 case schematics sent to them by an anonymous leakster. What we're able to extract from them are the handset's purported dimensions - 5.65 x 2.78 x 0.28in (143.52mm x 70.70mm x 7.19mm). This means the S6 will probably be a little taller, a little less wider, and a full 0.039in (1mm) thinner than its predecessor.

We can also see that Samsung is keeping the design in line with the tradition, as the schematics portray the same rectangle with rounded corners shape (that's called an ellipse, but let's make an exception) with a ...

Pimp my phone: the best new launchers and interface tools (January part 2)

We took a glimpse at what's new and cool at the Play Store in the interface draping department for the past two weeks, and noticed a few launchers and interface tools that you might find useful, or at least funky to try out. Granted, the crop is not very rich, as people haven't been hunkering down on code too much after the holiday hangover, but a couple of interesting takes on your homescreen organization can still be found.

First in line is a new take on a simple, Material Design launcher with a card-based system that is done right, there is a fine representative in the fast-and-light ...

Another set of purported design leaks for the upcoming HTC One M9 has popped up, this time showing the handset in its alleged color schemes. including a golden version, and sizing it up to a One (M8) to spot the design differences.

On the back, the upcoming HTC flagship smartphone should feature a redesigned 20 MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, leaving the UltraPixel technology for the front-facing camera you see in the middle here. The two circular The new One should have an octa-core processor (almost certainly Qualcomm's 64-bit Snapdragon 810), paired with 3 GB of ...

Casing for Apple iPad Pro leaks, revealing possible cutouts for four speakers

Apple has found religion. After seeing how raising the screen size on the Apple iPhone could put a charge into demand, Apple plans on doing it all over again with the Apple iPad. It is a simple mathematical process. Going from a 4-inch screen on the Apple iPhone 5s and Apple iPhone 5c, to a 4.7-inch display on the Apple iPhone 6 and a 5.5-inch glass on the Apple iPhone 6 Plus, helped Apple ship a whopping 74.5 million iPhone units for its first fiscal quarter. That was up from 51 million units shipped the previous year.

So now that Apple has come to understand that a larger screen means ...

Nokia updates its contextual Z Launcher with icon pack support and other UI improvements

Remember Nokia's Z Launcher, which recently launched as an open beta on Google Play and graces the interface of the Nokia N1 tablet? The streamlined launcher was among the more innovative that we've seen of recent - all in all, you get a single home screen with a clock widget, a short list of your recently-used apps, and a regular dock at the bottom of the screen. The main selling point of this home screen replacement is that you can search through your apps by writing their names directly on your home screen.

At first, the contextual app was devoid of any customization features ...

Malaysian commercial for Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is all about the curved glass-NOT!

What is the point of making a television commercial for the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge without pointing out the curved glass, and the extra real estate on the display? This ad runs a few seconds shy of two minutes and shows two ultra-competitive men meeting at a tarmac where a plane sits. The next thing you know, both men are jumping out of the plane with a Samsung Galaxy Note Edge.

The two are actually in a fiercely competitive game of Tic Tac Toe and they pass the handset back and forth as the earth quickly comes up from under them. Can they crown a champion and still have time to ...

This Nokia featurephone is the choice of U.K. drug dealers

Here is an interesting story out of the U.K. It seems that there remains strong demand for a certain Nokia featurephone from a specific demographic. Because older handsets don't track where you are every second of the day, drug dealers have been looking to purchase old school phones. The model of choice is the Nokia 8210.

The Nokia 8210 is perfect for the person who needs cellphone connectivity without all of the modern trappings. Without GPS, the phone isn't be tracked by satellite. Without Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity, the cops have a hard time getting information from the handset when ...

Did Apple top Samsung in the fourth quarter? Research firms differ

By increasing the size of the screen on the Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus to 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches respectively, Apple went after the large-screened Android phones that were taking sales away from the company's iconic smartphone. The strategy worked perfectly, and it is Apple that has rebounded strongly with a calendar fourth quarter that saw it beat all Wall Street estimates with 74.5 million iPhones shipped from October through December.

Was it enough for Apple to become the global smartphone market share leader for the calendar fourth quarter? It depends on which research ...

Spigen Air Skin Case for Apple iPhone 6 Review

Spigen’s portfolio of cases for the iPhone 6 is long and extensive, ranging from protective ones like the Tough Armor, to the always-classy Neo Hybrid line, but they also have ones that are minimalist. Seriously, when we talk about being a minimalist case, we mean the kind that are simply there to offer minimal protection – with no emphasis on style. One particular new case from them fits the bill, the Spigen Air Skin Case!

Talk about being ultra-thin! The Spigen Air Skin is undoubtedly that, as it sports a design that makes the phone feel naked to an extent. Call it what you like, but ...

Spigen Capella Case for Apple iPhone 6 Review

Neo Hybrid, Tough Armor, and Slim Armor, they’re the familiar case series that accessories maker Spigen has been producing over the years for various phones. With the introduction of the iPhone 6, which sports a totally new redesign from the previous model, Spigen decided to also develop a brand new line – the Capella case. Starting with a fresh design, the Capella case no doubt has a lot to live up to, especially how some of its other case series have been widely adopted.

This is surely a change in direction, mainly because for a while there, they’ve been simply making minor alterations ...

Google on Google Glass: Not what we hoped for

Google held its earnings call Thursday and while some numbers were more impressive than others, the company admitted that the project that is Google Glass did not pan out as desired.

It simply boiled down to Google having to rethink its strategy for Glass, and CFO Patrick Pichette gave no indications that the initiative was being abandoned, even though the explorer program had been canceled.

Pichette explained that Google had to re-evaluate its plans with Glass, and make the “tough calls.” Earlier this month, Google suspended sales of Glass and “graduated” the project out of ...

Sony to close down its Music Unlimited streaming service, Spotify will pick up the slack

Seeing that Sony operates the world’s second largest record label and other major music publishing businesses, it is a remarkable turn of events to see the company announce that its separately operated streaming music service, called Music Unlimited, will shut down at the end of March.

The $10-per-month subscription service is one of the largest in operating in Japan, and has been available in the United States for four years. Music Unlimited is integrated with a number of Sony products like PlayStation, and Xperia smartphones.

Motorola sold 3 million smartphones in India since 2014, plans to boost efforts this year

Although it faces fierce competition from local companies, as well as from Samsung, Motorola is quite successful at selling smartphones in India.

According to The Economic Times, Motorola sold more than 3 million smartphones in India since February 2014 (when it returned to the Indian market after a period of absence). Half of that represents Moto G and Moto E units, both of which are affordable handsets that offer quite a lot of bang for the buck.

To push things further, Amit Boni, head of Motorola's India operations, said that the company "will be doubling up" its efforts in India, ...

OnePlus to unveil OxygenOS on February 12th

Like the S6, the Blade L3 - pictured above - sports a 5-inch display, though its resolution is a lower one: 540 x 960 pixels. The new Blade further features an 8 MP rear camera, 2 MP front-facing camera, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB ...

Google didn't expect the Nexus 6 to be in high demand, hence the supply constraints

Ever since its release back in November last year, the Google Nexus 6 has been constantly in and out of stock. Customers wanting to buy the handset via Google Play were often unable to do so. Earlier this month, Motorola (the manufacturer of the Nexus 6) started offering the smartphone via its own website, but that didn't really solve the problem (right now, the 64 GB Nexus 6 is out of stock anyway).

Of course, all this means that there's demand for the Nexus 6. Google today reported its Q4 2014 results, and, during the earnings call, the company's CFO, Patrick Pichette, also talked about ...
